Senate Bill 12-098 CPR Training for High School Students By Sen. Williams S-D and Rep. I’m Term Limited so I don’t care Massey-R, have introduced a bill that defies logic!!
The bill requires for high school graduation that students must know not only CPR but also how to operate an automated external defibrillator and the American Heart Association will gladly provide these classes for a fee to the schools.
So schools which are already in the red will now have to add this class to the list of unfunded state ideas/suggestions which as a side note is why Senator Cadman’s bill SB12-026 is so important to pass as it prohibits the state from forcing unfunded mandates/regulations on local governments. The State will set aside 5% of the budget but to believe that this will fully fund this idiotic idea is laughable.
Colleges are complaining about how many new students must first take remedial math and english classes but somehow the k-12 system is going to produce graduates who can’t add 2+2=4 but CAN operate a defibrillator?
Is this really the role of schools? Is this really the job of the State to force high schools to teach this? Where is the money coming from to take 5% of State funds to establish the school cardiopulmonary resuscitation and automated external defibrillator training cash fund?
The bill requires that the training be provided by:
“by a public or private entity that is recognized as a qualified provider of cardiopulmonary resuscitation training by a national nonprofit agency that has a mission to certify providers of cardiopulmonary resuscitation training.”
Gosh what organization has the infrastructure and established program to do this??? Would that be the American Heart Association who is apparently pushing this bill and stands to profit from this bill?
This is how I started my morning at 6am with my blood pressure shooting through the roof after reading about this bill but no worries as soon the neighborhood 12th graders will be equipped with defibrillators and the knowledge that 2+2 = 5.
